Joining the Peace Corp?

I'd like to join the peace corp after high school. I know this can be very dangerous, especially for young women, which i am. Just how dangerous can it be and are there certain countries that are "safer" to go to than others? Do you recommend it in all honesty and could I choose where to go, like perhaps to Europe?
