Which of these words would best replace "see" in the following sentence?

I like "D" because visualizing means you get a mental picture of what Steinbeck is describing. Behold sounds too archaic, detect means you're looking for something specific or hidden in the author's words, and comprehend means something you need to understand. Since most of Steinbeck's literature is fictional, it is not necessary to detect or comprehend. I think visualize says it all. Just my humble opinion.
