Lennie has the mentality of a child which is displayed through his actions: kills mice by petting them too hard, doesn't want to get in trouble & tries to hide his mistakes from George. Lennie has to rely on George to live and work. His facial features are described like animal like features in comparison to George who is smart and act like a normal person.
